MASTERS ATHLETES ON THE MOVE TO WORLD INDOORS

MASTERS ATHLETES ON THE MOVE TO WORLD INDOORS - 11 ATHLETES FROM SOUTH AFRICA WILL BE PARTICIPATING AT THE WORLD MASTERS INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS - TORUN, POLAND (24 - 30 MARCH 2019

Gautengers

Bennie (40-44) and Mariette Botha (35-39)

Mariette has just entered the 35 age group and is one of our countries top masters athletes in the sprints and high jump.   She has a personal best height of 1.72 and has participated in several senior events, finishing among the medals against athletes 10 - 15 years younger. She would have ranked 7th in the world in 2018 in the 35-39 age group.

She has set her sights on a medal or two at the World Indoors and a S.A. Record / personal best in the high jump in the 35-39 age group. Mariette and husband, Bennie who will be participating in the field events, make an awesome team and are sure to make their 3 daughters back home very proud !

Ian Hacker (50-54) will be the man to watch in the highly competitive age group in the 60 and 200m sprints.   Ian competed at the World Masters Outdoor Championships in Lyon, France in 2015 and the World Outdoors in Perth, Australia in 2016.  In Lyon he progressed to the semi-final in the 100m, and just missed qualification in the 200m. In Perth, a year later, Ian finished just outside the medals in the 100m with an excellent time of 11.73.  Ian served as Chairman on the CGMA committee for two years and is currently vice-president of SAMA.

Ida-Marie Strydom (40-44) who holds the S.A. record of 3.10m in the pole vault, has set her focus on a PB in this very technical event.  She won bronze in the pole vault at the World Outdoor Champs in Spain last year, and ranked 5th overall on the World Rankings with a height of  3.10m, which she should surpass at the Indoors.

Kallie Burger (35-39) is our road running specialist and will be competing in the 10km and half marathon road events at the Indoors.   These two distances were incorporated in the World Indoor Champs, shortly after the previous World Masters Road Running Championships disbanded after the last event in 2004.  Kallie is a newcomer to masters and has PB’s of 31.30 (10k) and 1.11.20 (21.1k) respectively, and is sure to leave his mark on these two events.
